The Musical Box – “And Then There Was Phil” 2026-2027
In 1978, Genesis embarked on their last tour featuring a stage show created and constructed entirely by the band themselves – the now-legendary “Mirror Show” using six gigantic mirrors capable of moving in all directions.
For three decades, the Canadian band The Musical Box has authentically reconstructed and restaged Genesis’s historic stage shows from the Peter Gabriel era down to the very last detail. With their new production, “And Then There Was Phil” they now turn their attention to the early years (1976–1980) of Phil Collins as the band’s new frontman and the beginning of their rise to become one of the world’s most successful rock bands.
Performed on original instruments with their trademark uncompromising perfection – and featuring all the legendary drum duets from the original live shows – this spectacular new production is based primarily on the technology of the 1978 “Mirror Show”. To achieve this, the six large mirror elements – capable of free movement via servomotors – were technically reconstructed and replicated 1:1 in collaboration with the original designer Theo Botschiver. Combined with Genesis’s original 1970s laser system, half a century later this recreates a monumental light show – one that would be impossible to replicate using modern Vari-Lites.
With “And Then There Was Phil” The Musical Box consciously focus exclusively on the then-new frontman Phil Collins – who would soon go on to become an international solo star. Consequently, older songs originally performed by Peter Gabriel are deliberately largely omitted; instead, the most significant and powerful new tracks from the A Trick of the Tail and Wind & Wuthering tours are incorporated into the 1978 stage setup – along with a lengthy sequence from the 1980 Duke tour, which was celebrated triumphantly by audiences nationwide during the UK premiere of “And Then There Was Phil” in 2026.
Arguably The Musical Box’s most technically demanding production – even more complex than their Peter Gabriel-authorized recreation of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, “And Then There Was Phil” will present the musical and visual excellence of the Phil Collins-era Genesis (during their years of reinvention) to an astonished audience with flawless perfection across Europe in 2027.
